Our Outreach Ministry |

St. John on the Mountain’s Outreach ministry touches many lives. Many us are privileged to serve; the Clergy, the Vestry, the Outreach Commission, the Youth Group, the Church School, the Prayer Shawl Circle, our pledging families and dozens of (often unsung) individuals. And we serve many. From our $40,000 capital donation to Habitat for Humanity to filling Heifer Arks with coins; from making prayer shawls, soup and pies to helping to build a house; from monthly journeys to Plainfield to serve food at Grace’s Kitchen to traveling to witness with our fellow Anglicans in El Salvador. We on the Mountain are abundantly blessed and we know that Jesus teaches us to share those blessings. So we ask you, all our fellow parishioners to come with us, come down the Mountain, and spread your blessings into a needy world. This newsletter describes some of the work that has been undertaken and offers opportunities for you to participate. It is not just our treasure that is needed, it is our time and talent, our work and our witness. We ask that you join us, in Jesus’ name. Want to get involved? Kevin Vernimb, third from left, organizes a basketball shoot to raise money for Nothing but Nets. |
This UN backed organization plans to reduce the 1 million malaria deaths that occur each year to zero by 2015. Many of those who die are infants and toddlers. The plan is simple. The disease can be avoided if people sleep under mosquito nets. Nothing but Nets purchases these nets with the funds it raises and distributes them in communities at risk, usually in Africa. A net costs US$10.00. SJOM Outreach Commissioner and Youth Group member, 14-year old high-school freshman, Kevin Vernimb, has raised over $10,000 from basketball shooting contests, donations and an email campaign. The Outreach Commissioners, Clergy and parishioners have personally contributed almost $2,000 to his fund. Kevin, who was described as a “pint-sized philanthropist” in an AP News article on September 26th, was quoted as saying, “I started to think how I could help, because it is so easy…just $10 buys a bed net that will save a child’s life.” You can buy a net from Kevin today at the Outreach Rally. Only $10.00 to save a life!

| Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. | |||
