The Reverend Lawrence Civale

Interim Priest

Fr. Civale grew up in the Albany area. He first started worshiping in the Episcopal Church as a teenager and has worshiped and served as a layperson throughout much of his life in urban parishes in the Albany area, New York City and Boston. Prior to his ordination to the priesthood in December 2020, he worked as a clinical social worker, psychotherapist and as a senior congregational consultant in the Diocese of Massachusetts. In 2017 he went on to study at Virginia Theological Seminary, where he received a Master in Divinity. Since his ordination, he has served as Priest-in Charge at St Paul’s in Chester, PA. He loves to be outdoors and enjoys long walks and hiking and touching the things that nature offers. He enjoys museums, singing, concerts of all types of music, and exploring the New Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania region.

Gloria Yin

Director of Music & Organist

Gloria is a conductor, pianist, and singer originally from London, UK, now based in the USA. As Director of Music at SJOTM, they provide music for Sunday 10am services and direct the choir. Their priorities for music at St John's are to maintain a warm, dedicated community of singers, and enhance the spiritual experience of Sunday services through music. 

 

Gloria maintains a schedule of professional projects, which in 2022-23 includes joining the Opera Theater of St Louis and Sarasota Opera Company as a pianist and conductor. They are also co-founder of New Muses Project, an organization aimed at radically reconstructing classical music through a justice lens, producing a high-quality album series of under-recorded music and building an educational web resource showcasing underrepresented composers.

 

Gloria holds degrees from Yale School of Music (Choral Conducting) and Princeton University (Mathematics and Piano Performance).

Lynn Mitchell

Director of Children's Ministries

As the Director of Children’s Ministries, Lynn manages the Sunday School and other educational programs and activities. Lynn has attended St. John on the Mountain since 2005. She and her husband were married here, and all of their children were baptized here.

 

Lynn has a BA in English from Lehigh University and a MA in English Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to working as the Director, she was a middle school Language Arts teacher for ten years. She is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Christian Education Directors. Look for Lynn on Sunday mornings, near the Children’s Library or downstairs in the Sunday school hallway.

Lisa Keenan

Finance Manager

Lisa began working at St. John on the Mountain in 2008. She has a BS in Public Accounting from Montclair State University and holds a CPA license in the state of NJ. Lisa had 17 years of corporate accounting experience before moving on to the church environment. She lives in Somerset County with her husband and two children. Any questions regarding contribution records or accounts payable should be directed to Lisa. She is in the office on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Finance Office is located on the 2nd floor of the Parish House.

Kathy Tober

Director, St. John's Nursery School

Kathy Tober holds a BS degree in Biology from Dickinson College and an MBA in Pharmaceutical Studies from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She spent 24 years in the pharmaceutical industry, working in the area of clinical trial management. Her most recent role was the Global Head of Contracts and Outsourcing at Roche/Genentech, in which she oversaw $2B in outsourced clinical services and managed a large staff across 4 continents. 

 

Kathy has lived in Bernardsville since 2013 with her husband, Peter, and their two children, John and Grace.  She is a member of SJOTM where she has served as a member of the Vestry and currently is on the Discernment Committee. She is also a member of the Somerset Hills Board of Education and a former Co-President of the Home and School Association (HSA) for Bedwell Elementary.

Carey Kane

Director, St. John's Nursery School

Carey Kane holds a BS in Social Psychology from Lehigh University and an MS in Museum Education from Bank Street College. Carey has an elementary teaching certificate and has spent time in the classroom as an enrichment teacher at Bedwell Elementary, as well as an astronomy teacher for the Newark Museum. She helped open the Liberty Science Center in 1993 and managed its public education department. She later worked for the National Inventor's Hall of Fame, developing a summer science and creativity camp that is offered throughout the country. Her focus has been creating and managing educational programs that foster science education and creativity development. Carey came to SJNS in 2016 as a teacher assistant. She is a trustee on the Somerset Hills Education Foundation. Carey lives in Bernardsville with her husband, Henry, and their three children, Hunter, Elizabeth, and Abigail.
